Margaret Hendry School Q&As

Margaret Hendry School Q&As

When will the new playground work and landscaping be ready to use?

The installations to the playground and the new produce garden have now been completed. While we had some delays due to the wet weather and COVID-19 Health Directions both are ready.

When will the new learning space extension start and when will it be ready?

Construction has recommenced to extend the Administration Building, under strict COVID-19 Health Directions and site-specific management guidelines. The extension is expected to be complete by day 1 Term 1 2022. We note that this may be impacted by weather and any future COVID-19 restrictions.

How do students, families and visitors enter the school grounds?

Once school resumes, families should continue to use the new entry and exit points to access the school via the gate near the Community Hub carpark.

What safety precautions will be in place to keep our children safe throughout the building process?

Once school resumes, staff will continue to be positioned outside the main entry gates and drop off points to ensure children can safely arrive and depart school.

The building site is enclosed by a construction site fence and will be locked at all times. If you see an emergency or safety risk, please call the building project manager on
0418 675 643.

Is Margaret Hendry School being expanded?

The Education Directorate has begun planning for the expansion of Margaret Hendry School. Gungahlin continues to be one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and enrolment demand continues to increase in North Gungahlin. Margaret Hendry School is expected to require additional facilities and learning communities to accommodate the enrolment of up to an additional 600 students over the coming decade.

When will it be ready?

The project will have new learning communities ready for the 2023 school year. We note that this may be impacted by weather and COVID-19 restrictions.

What will the expanded school look like?

The end goal of the project is the construction of a new Learning Community for up to 600 students that incorporates general learning settings, specialist learning settings including food technology and Science Technology Engineering Art and Maths (STEAM), and small group programs.

Additional carparking, play spaces and flexible outdoor learning areas will also be provided, along with the expansion and reconfiguration of existing school facilities including the administration, library and community facilities.

What work has occurred so far?

Master planning and preliminary design has begun in consultation with the school.

This process has been focused on what can be achieved that does not put increased pressure on the existing school and will maximise the sustainability of the expanded school and provide tangible benefits.

Increased carparking is essential to support the school community as it expands. A Development Application has already been submitted to seek approval to expand the school’s carparking.

The Education Directorate anticipates appointing a Head Contractor in December 2021 allowing detailed design to begin and the planning of construction activities in 2022.
